Dan and I continued on our Central Florida Ale Trail and made it to Ocean Sun Brewery. This brewery holds a special place in my heart because it is in the newly name neighborhood The Hourglass District, which is also the neighborhood I lived in for almost five years. The Hourglass District is probably one of the last affordable neighborhoods outside of downtown. It is definitely growing and expanding. When Ocean Sun opened two years ago it was a welcoming addition to the neighborhood.
Ocean Sun is located in a strip mall. However, once you walk inside, you won’t feel like you are in a strip mall anymore. The space is large and inviting. The bar has plenty of seating, but if that happens to fill up, you will find several tables located behind the bar. When we visited the brewery a stage was set up right in front of the tanks, so it definitely appears they offer live music.
Even though Ocean Sun doesn’t serve food (except their awesome free popcorn), they have an arrangement set up with La Fiesta Mexican Grill which is the restaurant next door. You can order at the bar and they will add it to your bar tab. They will also bring your food to you. If you’re not feeling Mexican, there are plenty of other local restaurants in the area. Ocean Sun doesn’t mind if you bring food in.
Their beer may not be adventurous or constantly changing, however what they do brew is always true to their style. On this visit I ordered Cycle Therapy which is a Pale Ale and Dan ordered Azacca Session IPA. We enjoyed them both. My favorite beer is Buchi Beer which is a Sweet Stout. I especially enjoy it when they have it on Nitro.
Since Ocean Sun has such a large open space, they are a perfect place to host different gatherings. I have been there during a birthday party and several charitable events. If you find yourself exploring The Hourglass District, make sure you check out Ocean Sun!
